Thom Buchanan is a painter, drawer and cross-disciplinary artist residing in Adelaide.

In 2010 he graduated from the School of Art, UniSA with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and has since exhibited extensively locally, nationally, and internationally along with being a finalist and winner of a number of art prizes. In 2011 Buchanan collaborated with Garry Stewart’s Australian Dance Theatre on 'Worldhood' using a live performance drawing techniques, drawing on a monumental scale 2.4 x 28m in 60 miniutes with 17 dancers at Her Majesties Theatre SA.  In 2013 Buchanan was involved in several major collaborations such as the Centenary of Canberra 2013 live performance drawing with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, 'The Kreutzer Sonata' for the State Theatre Company which premiered at the 2013 Adelaide Festival, and was one of several artists commissioned create a mural in Canterbury Museum as part of the Rise Festival, Christchurch New Zealand. 2015 saw Buchanan created a large-scale drawing for ‘do it' [Adelaide] exhibition at the Samstag Museum of Art. Conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist this exhibition has been running for 20+ years in countless countries around the world. In 2016 Buchanan Worked on a massive Mural for The Royal Croquet Club spaning cube 6x14m.  As well as working with The State Theatre Company and Andrew Bovell on ‘Thing I know to be true’ back drop 8x15m which has toured AUST and UK And was nominated for a Ruby Award as well as being selected as a finalist in the prestigious Fleurieu Art Prize 2016 at Samstag Museum of Art.  2017 Has been a roller coaster year, Buchanan was a Finalist for the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing NSW and was selected as a Cultural Artist Delegate for SA and had a exhibition, Sights and Impressions Shandong Academy Museum, Jinan China.

Buchanan was awarded the People Choice Art Prize  for the Hadley Art Prize 2017 Hobart TAS, the richest landscape art prize in the world.

2018 Vivid Sydney live performative Drawing, which was a week residency making live stop animation to projection on building at 18 x 12m for hundred of thousands of onlookers.

Then Andrew Bovell's play ‘Things I Know to be True’  for the second time toured the UK. Over 30 venues, 100 performances and 40000+ audiences in Australia and UK since 2016-18

Cabaret Festival 2018 in collaboration with Slingsby Theatre Company.

In ‘Songs for those who’ve come across the sea’ this has been nominated for a SA Theatre critic Award. Which Buchanan made drawing/paintings to be animated/ digitally projected behind the band to convey and visually articulate the story about the complexities of being a human and refugee/migration finding home.
As well as being selected for Fleurieu Art Prize 2018 finalist and a finalist for The Don Dunstan Award 2018

Buchanan also got support from Arts SA as a Cultural Artist Delegate for SA, under the banner Made in Adelaide 2018 which culminated in live performances and collaborations in the Edinburgh Fringe and Surge Festival in Glasgow. Impressions of Shandong and South Australia at SASA Gallery SA after exhibiting in China last year, which a book has now been produced for this exhibition. In 2017 Buchanan and several Adelaide Artist travelled to exhibited at the Shandong Academy Museum, then did research to create a exhibition in response to China experience as cultural delegates engagement exhibition this will touring back to China next year.

As well as producing new work for exhibitions, commissions, several epic public and private murals and other projects set for 2019.

Buchanan work is held in corporate Australian collections and private collections across the world.
